There’s a lot we’ll do for a pair of limited edition Nike sneakers. Join a waiting list to find out exactly where and when a new pair will drop? No worries. Dig deep in the depths of international shoe sites to score a pair before they sell out? Of course.
Camp out overnight? Okay, we won’t do that… But a lot of people do. All in all, the right pair of sneakers will have us making some pretty bold moves, and when these new Nike sneakers drop on June 11, 2020, we’ll be bending over backwards to get our hands on them ā despite the fact they’re made from trash.
About Nike Space Hippie
The Space Hippie range from the sportswear giant is described as an “exploratory footwear collection” made from Nike’s own ‘space junk’ or rather, scrap material from the factory floors.
There are four silhouettes to come from the range, each of which will be constructed with leftover materials. The capsule is ultimately designed to reduce the environmental impact of fashion, and re-imagine solutions to the climate crisis. Nike is describing the move as a radical expression of circular design.
“Space Hippie product presents itself as an artifact from the future. It’s avant garde; it’s rebelliously optimistic,” says John Hoke, Nike’s chief design officer. “Space Hippie is also an idea. It is about figuring out how to make the most with the least material, the least energy and the least carbon.”
The result of the initiative is a futuristic-looking shoe collection that has Nike’s lowest carbon footprint score ever. “I’d say Space Hippie attacks the villain of trash,” Hoke says. “It’s changed the way we look at materials, it’s changed the way that we look at the aesthetics of our product. It’s changed how we approach putting product together.”
Materials that make up the finished products include ‘Space Waste Yarn’, made from 100% recycled material ā including recycled plastic water bottles, T-shirts and yarn scraps, recycled foam for in-soles, and ‘Crater Foam’, described as a granulated virgin material with a lower carbon footprint and an individual, bespoke finish.
How to buy the Nike Space Hippie collection
The four silhouettes in the Space Hippie range will be available from June 11, 2020, at Nike House of Innovation flagship locations and selected retailers.
These will absolutely sell out, so it’s worth taking the time to research some online stores who will stock and ship the shoes to Australia when they drop. One such store, Voo Berlin, has announced it will be stocking the collection.
Prices start from USD $130 and range to USD $180. You can find out more about the Space Hippie range and the story behind them on the official Nike site now.
