Netflix has been one of the major constants in peoples lives since it launched in Australia in 2015. During the first eight months of 2020, it has also been somewhat of a security blanket as we’ve gone through a tumultuous time with the coronavirus pandemic.
Now, just as most of the country is getting back to the new normal, Netflix Australia is hiking up its prices as of September 17.
The basic plan will now cost you $10.99, which is a one dollar difference from the original price of $9.99. The standard price has also risen, this time from $13.99 to $15.99 — which is a $2.00 difference, however, the premium plan remains unchanged.
New members will be charged the new price immediately, however, for existing members, the new amounts will be rolled out in the coming weeks according to their billing cycle.
This is the first time that Netflix has changed the price of its service since June 2017 when the Government changed its tax to include GST on digital products.
“We know Australians have never had more choices when it comes to entertainment, and we’re more committed than ever to delivering an experience that exceeds their expectations,” a Netflix spokesperson said.
“Members tell us how much they value the breadth and variety of the catalogue, and we’re updating our prices so that we can continue to invest in more shows and films.
“As always, there will be different plans so that people can pick a price that works for their budget.”
The price rise does mean that Netflix is one of the more expensive services and in Australia is now competing with BINGE, Stan, Disney +, Quibi, HayU, Kayo and Apple TV.
