Nancy Meyers has signed on with Netflix to write, direct and produce a film for the streaming giant.
Described as an ensemble comedy, details on the film thus far are scarce.
Meyers has made a name for herself as a master of the romantic comedy genre. Her past writing and directing credits include films like The Parent Trap, Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday, It’s Complicated, What Women Want, as well as Father of the Bride and its sequel, which she also produced.
Back in 2020, Meyers and Netflix released Father of the Bride Part 3 (ish), a short film released on social media, which reunited the cast of the first two films, alongside Robert De Niro, Florence Pugh and Ben Platt.
The short film was written and directed by Meyers, and produced by Reese Witherspoon.
It was the first time the cast of the films, which included Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Kieran Culkin, George Newbern and Martin Short, had been reunited in 25 years, and profits from the short film went to World Central Kitchen during the pandemic.
Meyers has had a prolific career in Hollywood thus far, even scoring a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for Private Benjamin, which starred Goldie Hawn as Judy, a bride who joins the US Army after her husband dies on their wedding night.
Millennials will most likely know Meyers for her directorial debut, The Parent Trap, which starred Dennis Quaid, Natasha Richardson and was Lindsay Lohan‘s first feature film role.
The upcoming film will be Meyers’ first since 2015’s The Intern, which starred Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro.
In Australia, viewers can rewatch Meyers’ iconic Christmas film The Holiday, as well as Something’s Gotta Give, on Netflix. Meanwhile, It’s Complicated is on BINGE, and The Parent Trap — as well as the Father of the Bride films — are on Disney+.
