Open any recent interior design magazine and one aesthetic trend you’re likely to see again and again is ‘modern farmhouse’. As its name would suggest, it’s a contemporary take on rustic living.
“It’s really about a lifestyle and bringing that simpler, clean aesthetic to a home, and really focusing on what matters the most,” Becky Shea, an interior designer and founder of Becky Shea Design, told Architectural Digest in January this year.
Today’s take on modern farmhouse decorating is rooted in rustic country charm peppered with warm minimalism and industrial elements somewhat like Scandinavian interior design, writes interior designer search platform, Decoraid.
“Striking just the right balance of pastoral and refined, modern farmhouse décor emphasises comfort and casual living with contemporary sensibilities reflective of today’s times,” it continues. “Think utilitarian, natural yet refined, country yet eclectic and sophisticated as go-to modern farmhouse interior design characteristics.”
In short, it’s about putting a fresh spin on rustic elements in your home, helping to make it feel stylised, but also warm and inviting – even if you live nowhere near a farm. Interiors publication Homes To Love believes the style has become so popular as it’s spoken to many of us.
“Its storybook collision of exposed beams, boards, battens and baths have us yearning for a simple life,” it writes. “Rustic, minimal, cosy, modern – this perfect blend of interior aesthetics allows you to highlight a multitude of different elements, from metal pendants to original chandeliers, with a casual disregard for the rules.”
Some tips for tapping into the modern farmhouse trend, according to Decoraid, include using organic and natural materials as the base, embracing imperfections in furniture as they’ll add charm, and being considered with décor. They also suggest adopting an edit, eliminate, and reconsider approach so that the space feels effortless and easy on the eye.
