Matilda: The Musical’s brilliant songs and whimsical setting catapulted Tim Minchin’s Broadway show to huge success.
Since debuting in 2010, the adaptation of Roald Dahl’s infamous novel has become synonymous with “naughty children” everywhere and due to its popularity, is being made into a feature film by Netflix.
Now, following in the footsteps of the original 1996 film starring Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito seems like an impossible feat, however, with Minchin’s magical musings, it might just be in for a fair chance.
While not much else is known about the newest adaptation, here’s everything we already know about the remake of Matilda.
What Will the Story Be About?
According to the official synopsis from the Broadway show: “Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey.
“Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!”

Oscar-winner Emma Thompson will star in the role of the petrifying headmistress Miss Trunchbull even though the role in the stage show, the role is typically played by a man.
