Charlize Theron’s character in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road is getting a back story and this time, Furiosa will be played by Emma star Anya Taylor-Joy.
Director George Miller has also tapped Australian actor Chris Hemsworth to star alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) in other leading roles.
In an interview with the New York Times back in May, Miller said that he had been searching for the right actress to take over Theron, one who was in her 20s.
The character was arguably the most popular to come out of Fury Road and after answering questions to “help” Theron with a backstory, they decided it was so compelling it needed to be turned into a film.
At first, Miller wanted to use CGI technology and age Theron backwards but didn’t think technology was “nearly there yet”.
“Despite the valiant attempts on ‘The Irishman,’ I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe,” he said during the interview.
Joining Miller’s team once again is Cinematographer John Seale, who after Fury Road, has spent the last seven years in semi-retirement.
“I’ve had wonderful opportunities to work after ‘Fury Road,’ as you can imagine, and I’ve passed on all of them,” Seale said during the same chat. “But on Fury Road, I told George, ‘If anybody else rings, I’m retired. If you ring, we’ll have lunch.’ And seven years later, he rang.”
Miller will not only direct but will co-write and produce the “new oral history” prequel under his Aussie Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner alongside Warner Brothers.
Furiosa will begin production once he completes his most recent project Three Thousand Years of Longing starring Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba.
