“I’m a bet?! I’m a fucking bet?!” If you grew up in the late 90s, then you know what film this quote comes from and back in 1999, it was a sleepover staple.
She’s All That was a classic romantic comedy of the late 1990s and besides the fact that Freddie Prinze Jnr — who was a major teen heartthrob at the time — starred in the film, it had everything a spectacular rom-com of that era needed.
A classic storyline of a nerdy girl makeover, a jock guy and his friends who “bet” on her, prom and the ultimate fairy-tale ending.
The film also starred Rachel Leigh Cook, who was just 20-years-old when she played the infamous Laney Boggs and who had previous roles in Dawson’s Creek and as Mary-Anne in the original The Baby-Sitters Club.
Since then, Cook has starred in over 80 projects including Robot Chicken, Las Vegas, Perception and her newest foray into the rom-com sphere as Susan Whitaker in Love, Guaranteed on Netflix.
At the time of publication, the streaming service original is already trending at number one in Australia after just one weekend.
And for fans who loved Cook in She’s All That, it’s the perfect nostalgic fluff-piece to watch when your brain can’t handle too much.
This time around, the genre of romantic comedy is spiced up for a modern-day audience.
To save her small law firm, earnest lawyer Susan (Cook) takes a high-paying case from Nick (Damon Wayans Jr.), a charming new client who wants to sue a dating website that guarantees love. But as the case heats up, so do Susan and Nick’s feelings for each other.
Without even seeing the film, you know exactly where it’s headed and that’s exactly why you should watch it — it has all the trimmings of a nostalgic 90s film.
Before we progress, it’s important to note that this isn’t a masterpiece. If you take it exactly as it is intended — a light-hearted flick — you won’t be disappointed. Any more than that, and you will be cringing. Hard.
The film was written by the team that brought you 2019’s Falling Inn Love — a film so terrible you couldn’t look away. As terrible as it was, writers Hilary Galanoy and Elizabeth Hackett know how to make an impact.
With their latest feature, the pair tried to pack as many clichés and one-dimensional characters into one film, succeeding in both — however you want to take that. They even added rom-com movie staple, Heather Graham as the owner of the Love, Guaranteed company that Wayans Jnr is trying to sue.
If you’re interested in a sugary, soapy, light-hearted rom-com, this film is a perfect choice — guaranteed.
