Never has there been more of a conscious focus on cleanliness. In 2020, a renewed dedication to health and safety has brought hygiene to the forefront of everyone’s minds, and hand sanitiser is just the beginning.

As the world becomes more aware of how easily germs can spread, the same cleaning principles we’ve long applied to our hands is being adapted to those high-touch items, like keys, devices and accessories.

We’ve started to make friends with disinfectant wipes and are seeing more and more bacteria-killing storage boxes, but never have we seen technology with germ-killing capabilities built into its functionality — until now.

Tech giant LG Electronics has introduced the LG TONE Free FN6 Wireless Earbuds, a pair of quality wireless earbuds with an industry-first self-cleaning UVnano case.

Cleverly incorporated into the convenient charging case, the game-changing new technology uses built-in ultraviolet light to kill 99.9% of bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus, after charging for 10 minutes via the cable.

It’s an amazing new piece of technology that only enhances the already awesome earbuds that would have us raving about for the sleek design and fab audio quality, even without the germ-killing charging case.

Here’s what we’re loving.

The sound

Genius case aside, sound quality is important for any earphone purchase. Thankfully, these bad boys deliver. The earbuds use Meridian Audio technology to offer high-quality clear and spatial sound across audio and video calling, plus of course, movie and music streaming. Big fan of deep bass? You can even engage the Customisable EQ Settings to personalise your music levels.

The tech works to optimise all aspects of the sound experience and uses Echo Cancellation and Passive Noise Cancellation to reduce unwanted peripheral noise. Should you need to have a quick conversation or hear for a transport announcement, for example, you can easily switch to Ambient Sound Mode to get a better grip on what’s going on around you.

The look

The LG TONE Free FN6 Wireless Earbuds come in black. Compact in the ear, as well as in the case, the earbuds are lightweight and are seamlessly popped into the ear. Unlike other wireless earbuds, they’re fairly unnoticeable.

In addition to the sleek look, the earbuds are incredibly comfortable with a Flexible Fit. Around 30 minutes in, I forgot I was even wearing them. For all-day working, walking, and taking Zoom calls, they don’t become irritating or make you want to pull them out after a few hours.

The special extras

We’ve come to expect less from smart battery life, but I’m pleased to confirm these earbuds can seriously go the distance. They’ll last around 18 hours — about six hours of consecutive playtime in the ear with an extra 12 hours in the charging case. Even better though, if you run out of battery and need a little extra boost, just five minutes of charging in the case will grant you an extra hour of use.

In addition, the earbuds are splashproof, which means they’re more than capable of coming with you on a rainy day run, and can pair with your LG TV via the LG TONE app for silent viewing. The app has a second handy feature — the Find My Earbuds function, which will send a beeping sound to your earbuds should you misplace one in your home.

LG’s new TONE Free FN6 Wireless Earbuds are available to purchase now from technology retailers for $279. If you ask us, this is incredible value when you consider the quality of sound and capability of the earbuds, especially in comparison to competitor brands.
