Larry David is a comic legend and the man who has brought us countless laughs over the years, with shows like Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Now, David is the focus of a new documentary that charts his career from stand-up comedy to being the co-creator and star of two of the most iconic comedy series’ in recent history.
The Larry David Story debuts on March 1 on HBO in the US, with the cabler explaining that the documentary will drop in two parts. Part one, titled “American Jewboy” will examine David’s “humble beginnings as an unfunny Brooklyn kid,” while the second part, “The Jewish Fountainhead,” finds him becoming “America’s favourite misanthrope.”
In the trailer for the doco, David can be seen musing: “Twenty-five years old, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. Well, what do you do when you’re talking and people are laughing? You do comedy.
“I never thought of myself as being funny. Anything I was associated with that could be successful was a shock.”
David cemented himself as one of the greats by co-creating Seinfeld with Jerry Seinfeld — with the cult favourite going on to become one of the most successful television shows of all time. His work on the series won him two Primetime Emmy Awards in 1993, for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing in a Comedy Series.
The comedian left Seinfeld after its seventh season and went on to create Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2000. The 11th season of the half-scripted comedy, in which David plays a fictionalised version of himself, premiered in 2021.
“I’m a total fraud. And the ‘Curb’ outlet for me is this guy I wanna be,” David says. “He’s completely honest, just the opposite of who I am, and it’s a thrill.”
The two-part documentary will also feature David in conversation with his friend (and director of the doco) Larry Charles, where he gets candid about his personal and professional highs and lows. He reflects on his bumpy road to success and also shares his thoughts on everything from metaphysics to parenthood.
Over the course of his career, David has been nominated for 27 Primetime Emmy Awards and three Golden Globe Awards.
It has yet to be revealed where The Larry David Story will stream in Australia but it’s likely to be on BINGE along with other HBO content such as Succession and And Just Like That so stay tuned.
