Kim Kardashian finalised her divorce from Kanye West this week and wasted no time giving us an intimate peek into her post-split life. In an Instagram gallery, Kardashian shared photos of the museum-style home she and West built together but that she scored in the divorce.
While snippets of the home have often appeared on Kardashian’s reality show and Instagram, it’s rare to be treated to so much of a look inside — and, quite frankly, will make you want to throw away all your… stuff.
Kardashian posted a photo of a bedroom, presumably her own, with a mattress placed on raised marble. The room has no bedside tables and nothing hung on the marble walls. Another photo shows a statue-like marble chair in her master bathroom… that looks wildly uncomfortable to sit in.
In February 2020, Kim Kardashian West and Kanye allowed a rare look inside their reported US $60 million Hidden Hills mansion in an issue of Architectural Digest.
At the time, it was the most we had seen of their home outside of Kardashian West’s ’73 Questions’ interview with Vogue, which was a huge deal in itself given West had previously ruled out social media posts and filming of Keeping Up with the Kardashians inside the house.
Over a series of years, the couple began drip-feeding pics and video snippets from within the home — first a pic of the all-white-everything dining room in April 2018 and, more recently, Kardashian West’s 17 trillion fridges — but this magazine spread seemed to indicate the former couple was finally ready to share the otherworldly architectural masterpiece with the world.
In the cover story with AD, the couple revealed some truly fascinating titbits about the home they built together for the family of six. Here are just a few key takeaways.
Kanye Paid a Motza For His Sofa
West dropped an obscene amount on the couple’s original Jean Royère Polar Bear sofa. “I sold my Maybach to get the Royère,” he told the magazine. “People told me I was crazy for what I paid for it, but I had to have it.”
For context, it’s estimated that only 150 polar-bear pieces were ever made by Jean Royère. They are so rare and so difficult to obtain now, that a set of two chairs and a sofa sell for around US $1 million, with the sofa alone costing US $600,000.
It’s likely only the rich and famous or most avid interior collectors who are lucky/wealthy enough to have one, with other A-list dwellers including Ellen DeGeneres and Jennifer Aniston.
It Took a Village to Create the “Futuristic Belgian Monastery”
West’s words, not ours. The couple came across the for-sale “McMansion” in 2014 while walking around LA together after the birth of their first daughter, North. While Kardashian West was immediately taken with the home, West admits it was not love at first sight.
“I didn’t really know Kanye’s style at that point, but I thought the house was perfection. Kanye was less enthusiastic. He said, ‘It’s workable,’” she tells the magazine.
They had enlisted the help of Belgian designer tastemaker, Axel Vervoordt, whom Kanye had met at antiques fairs and exhibitions in Europe. Vervoordt lead much of the design process in conjunction with West, but certainly had help from other designers that included Claudio Silvestrin, who designed the master bathroom, Vincent Van Duysen, who furnished the living room and the children’s rooms, and Peter Wirzt, who designed the green, landscaped gardens.
Vervoordt described the long design and decor process as “a search for cosmic values of peace and positive energy”.
“We had very profound conversations about the space of the mind and the importance of silence,” he told the magazine, adding: “We changed the house by purifying it, and we kept pushing to make it purer and purer”.
Kim and Kanye Insist Their Home Is “Kid-Friendly”
It’s like they read my mind. Despite the cream-coloured walls and floors and furniture and decor and just about everything else in the house that isn’t North’s hot-pink-everything bedroom, the home was designed not just for the couple’s minimal taste and pursuit of calmness, but for their four young children, too.
“The kids ride their scooters down the hallways and jump around on top of the low Axel tables, which they use as a kind of stage. This house may be a case study, but our vision for it was built around our family,” West said.
“In the end, we don’t take it too seriously. We’re not going to be fanatics,” Kardashian added.
