If you didn’t watch Judge Judy while chucking a sickie from school, were you really a kid of the 90s?
Judge Judy Sheindlin’s long running series introduced us to the world of civil law. From domestic disputes over a cat, unfair dismissals of employees from the local fast-food place and then people who didn’t pay child support — it was truly addictive viewing.
Host Sheindlin has announced that the popular series is coming to an end after 25 litigious years.
“I’ve had a 25-year-long marriage with CBS, and it’s been successful. Next year will be our 25th season, silver anniversary,” the star told Ellen Degeneres in a teaser clip for an upcoming episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“And CBS, I think, sort of felt they wanted to optimally utilize the repeats of my program because now they have 25 years of reruns. So what they decided to do was to sell a couple of years’ worth of reruns.”
While CBS has decided reruns are enough to thirst the quench of Judge Judy fans everywhere, Sheindlin, 77, is not ready to give up the gavel just yet.
“I’m not tired. So Judy Justice will be coming out a year later…,” she announced,
“Judge Judy you’ll be able to see next year, full year, all new shows. The following couple of years, you should be able to catch all the reruns that are currently carrying Judy, and Judy Justice will be going elsewhere. Isn’t that fun?” It sure is, Judy!
Sheindlin has been at the helm of the hit show since 1996, and is the number one first-run syndicated program — averaging a whopping 10 million viewers a day.
According to Variety, it is also the highest-rated court program for every season it has been on the air.
The show has received Daytime Emmys in 2013, 2016 and 2017 and in 2019, Sheindlin was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmys.
In August 2017, the show’s library was sold to CBS for a reported $95 – $100 million and as part of the deal, the program would continue into the 25th season, with no word on which US network will house the spin-off.
So, you can all continue to rise. Judge Judy Sheindlin isn’t going anywhere fast.
