The release date for John Wick 4 has been delayed once more, with the action film now set for a March 24, 2023 release — almost a whole year later than its scheduled drop of May 27, 2022.
The delay marks the second time the film has been pushed, after its original premiere date of May 21, 2021, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Whilst disappointing for fans, the delay might work out for the studio as the long-awaited Top Gun: Maverick opens over the 2022 Memorial Day weekend in the US (May 27), meaning the two flicks would have been in direct competition.
The three previous John Wick films have brought in over $579 million at the worldwide box office, with the last instalment debuting in May 2019 with Halle Berry and Laurence Fishburne starring alongside Keanu Reeves.
A fifth instalment has already been confirmed by Lionsgate, with the fourth and fifth films being shot back to back.
John Wick is not the only film to have been shuffled around in 2022 — Disney’s live-action studio has pushed back its untitled Indiana Jones reboot by almost a year, from July 29, 2022, to June 30, 2023. That particular production was delayed after 79-year-old star Harrison Ford suffered a shoulder injury onset in June, requiring the actor to take a break from filming while he healed.
Elsewhere, The Marvels will now shift to February 17, 2023, which, in turn, means Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is now slated for a July 28, 2023 opening.
Reeves will next be seen in The Matrix: Resurrections which opens in Australia on Boxing Day, alongside returning franchise star Carrie-Ann Moss. Neil Patrick Harris, Jada Pinkett Smith, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Christina Ricci, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Jessica Henwick, Telma Hopkins, Eréndira Ibarra, Toby Onwumere, Max Riemelt and Brian J. Smith also star.
The release of the anticipated follow-up to the sci-fi action trilogy was also changed, albeit this time brought forward, having been originally slated for a 2022 release. However, Warner Bros. decided to move the premiere up to December 2021, thrilling fans of the first three films.
