If shopping more sustainably — buying only what you need and from suppliers that are doing right (or, at least better) by the environment — is one of your goals for 2022, you’ll be pleased to know about IKEA’s new range of vases, KONSTFULL.
Created in collaboration with British designer Ilse Crawford, the KONSTFULL collection of vases is all mouth-blown and made from leftover glass. And though they’re designed to hold flowers, with their semi-transparent glass and clean shapes, the vases work on their own, sans-flowers, too.
The vases, which range in price from $22 to $25, come in five different colours and sizes, including a 10cm green frosted glass cylinder style, 19cm green bowl-shaped and a 26cm clear textured glass, the latter of which will work on any lounge room mantlepiece or bedside table.
“The pieces in the KONSTFULL collection not only make a statement but are also made from recovered glass, resulting in us consuming less raw materials and lowering our environmental impact,” says Clotilde Passalacqua, Interior Design Leader at IKEA UK and Ireland via UK publication Stylist.
“What sets these vases apart is their tactile, organic feel — they vary in terms of surface quality and texture. Some are smooth and clear, others are matte, opaque or frosted, while others have air bubbles caught beneath the glass. These stunning and distinctive design features mean the complete family really standouts when paired together or individually — with the varying colours and textures adding depth to your home.”
The KONSTFULL series is a part of a number of collaborations Crawford is working on with IKEA, with a key area being home accessories or, what Karin Gustavsson, Range and Design Leader at IKEA Sweden, describes as “the small ingredients of life at home that turn four walls into an individual comfort zone and can magically transform every space — every day and everywhere, no matter what.”
Crawford herself says she aims to create environments where humans feel comfortable and at home, designing for a positive mental and environmental impact. When she designs for the home, her focus is on giving extra care and attention to our everyday activities — no matter how small.
“We obsess about materiality and tactility and creating things so appealing you wouldn’t want to throw them away,” she says.
Crawford’s first collaboration with IKEA, SINNERLIG, in 2015 was a big hit, with a pendant lamp from the collection becoming an icon product that’s still popular today. Today, her collaboration with the Swedish furniture maker is on a long-term basis with a range of products being rolled out in the coming couple of years — all using honest and sustainable materials, boasting a high-quality design and with an emphasis on well-being.
