IKEA has levelled up from flat-packed furniture and meatballs with a new capsule collection of apparel and accessories.
Designed in close collaboration with IKEA Sweden, the collection was specifically ideated for IKEA’s Japan arm, and is said to be inspired by, and made for, the people of Tokyo.
The Efterträda collection, which takes its name from the Swedish word for ‘successor’, was designed to challenge weather apparel and accessories could be the next big step for IKEA. “Could our clothing and accessories line succeed our home furnishing solutions?” IKEA asks in a press release.
The collection is set to expand however is currently made up of 10 items, including a T-shirt, hoodie, tote bag, umbrella, bath towels, and water bottles.
Every item in the range offers the same simple aesthetic, is either white or sunshine yellow, and carries the printed motif of the IKEA logo, plus a barcode, which is actually the barcode of the famous Billy Bookcase — a top-selling item at IKEA worldwide.
Even better, the range was produced in line with IKEA’s mission for achieving a circular economy by 2030. The T-shirts, hoodies and towels are made from 100% sustainably-sourced cotton, and the umbrella is made from recycled polyester.
Prices range from ¥399 (AU $5.20) for a water bottle, and climb to ¥2499 (AU $32.70) for a hoodie.
The Efterträda collection first dropped exclusively at the IKEA Harajuku store in Tokyo for from July 31 to August 6, but has now become available in all stores and online.
While it appears online shipping is available within Japan only, it’s likely that someone desperate to own an item in the line could get their hands on a product via a reseller on eBay. You know what they say: Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
You can read more about the collection and browse the full range on the IKEA Japan site now.
