Oh, boy have we been waiting for this one.
House of Gucci starring Lady Gaga and Adam Driver has released its first trailer and, as expected, the fashion, glamour and excess are to die for (literally—that’s kind of the plot of the movie).
Also, can we please just take a moment to appreciate the sheer star power of this cast? In addition to Gaga and Driver, we have Jared Leto (who is practically unrecognisable), Al Pacino, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Jack Huston.
The film centres around Patrizia Reggiani (Gaga), the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci (Driver), who plotted to kill her husband, who was, of course, the grandson of renowned fashion designer Guccio Gucci.
Reggiani ultimately served 16 years in prison for the crime of orchestrating the assassination of her ex.
The story takes place over three decades and explores the themes of love, betrayal, decadence, revenge, and murder while examining what a name means, what it’s worth, and how far a family will go for control.
Speaking to IndieWire in April 2021, House of Gucci cinematographer Dariusz Wolski likened the project to a soap opera saying, “This film, because it’s high fashion ’80s and ’90s, it’s going to be a little different. I’m still trying to find a look for it. The ‘80s weren’t a particularly good-looking period.
“The fashion world or these fashion shows, they were not that great looking. You look at the big coats and stuff and [go] hmm… So it’s a bit of a kitschy, funny, tragic tragedy — like a high-end soap opera. With a crazy cast as well.”
Well, much respect to Wolski, director Ridley Scott and Oscar-winning costume designer Janty Yates, because the styling of the film has me longing to be a part of this extravagant world, even if it does mean aiding and abetting a crime. Kidding! Sort of.
Notably, Yates and her team were granted unlimited access to Gucci’s vintage archives to create the film, which enabled them to accurately capture historical details. However, it should also be noted that the actual Gucci family, who have objected to the film being made, have not owned the fashion house since 1993.
House of Gucci will open in cinemas on November 25, 2021. In the meantime, check out the trailer below.
