Revealed: The Fate of Your Favourite HBO Shows Like ‘Succession’ and ‘And Just Like That’

For years now, HBO has been pumping out some truly exceptional content. From the original series of Sex and the City and Game of Thrones to documentaries like The Defiant Ones and, of course, the show most likely to be voted the GOAT — The Wire, the cable network knows how to deliver the goods.

More recently, series such as Euphoria, The White Lotus, Mare of Easttown and Succession have had us totally captivated and praying for more.

We know The White Lotus is definitely coming back for a second outing but we don’t quite know the fate of Mare of Easttown yet (although Kate Winslet has said she would love to reprise her role). Additionally, Emmy favourite Hacks is definitely greenlit for a second season at HBO Max and splashy new period drama The Gilded Age has also been given the go-ahead for a sophomore season.

HBO’s content chief Casey Bloys has shed some light on the future of several other fan favourites at the cable network. Read on to find out what the future holds for the HBO series you love most.

Succession

It’s a simple fact that we can’t get enough of the Roy family and their conniving ways. Over the course of three seasons, Succession has attracted a dedicated fan base, racked up a pile of Emmy nominations and awards and received rapturous praise from even the toughest tv critics.

We know that season four is definitely happening, but what about beyond that? According to Bloys, it’s all up to series creator Jesse Armstrong.

“That’ll be [series creator] Jesse [Armstrong]’s call, obviously,” Bloys told TVLine. “He’s with the writers now, talking about Season 4. I imagine at some point he will let us know where he lands on whether this is the last or if there’s more. Generally speaking, we leave it to the showrunner/creators to come to us to let us know when it’s the time to end the story. So we’ll see.”

And Just Like That…

Whether you have loved the reboot or lamented that it was merely a shell of the gritty original, chances are you would still happily watch another season of And Just Like That…

According to Bloys, he and his team are very hopeful for more of the Sex and the City reboot and revealed during an interview with Variety that showrunner Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker are currently chatting about the options.

“We’re thrilled with how the show did and Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker are talking to make sure there’s a creative direction that they’re excited by,” he said.

“They will come to us when they’re ready, but I hope they have something they’re excited by… I know they had the idea of Big’s death as a way to examine this kind of time in your life, in your 50s. I think they wanted to see how it went and how they felt. It turns out, they had a good time. So I imagine they’re going to come up with something they’re excited by, but we’re just giving them their time.”

House of the Dragon

Season one of the Game of Thrones prequel hasn’t even premiered yet, but Bloys told Variety the team at HBO are already thinking about what’s next.

“If you’re betting on whether we’re going to do a second season, I think it’s probably a pretty good bet,” he said. “Generally speaking, we usually let something air and see how it does, but obviously, we’ll make preparations ahead of time to make sure we’re ahead of the game.”

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty

Another one that is yet to premiere (it lands on BINGE on March 7), is Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty which documents the “showtime” era of the LA Lakers after being bought by Jerry Buss.

“Even before we went into production, it was just one of those realizations that the Lakers dynasty is still going,” he said. “The drama is still ongoing, so there’s no reason why it has to end at the end of the Showtime era. It can keep going. So obviously we’ll see what [the executive producers] want to do. But I think it will be multiple seasons for sure.”
