New year, new award season. The 2024 Golden Globes took place today, giving us the first taste of what’s to come on the road to the Academy Awards in March.
The ceremony was hosted by comedian Jo Koy, but the reception to his opening monologue was… muted, at best. Koy, who was announced as host of the show on December 21, even denounced some of the jokes mid-monologue as he failed to win over the room.
“Some I wrote, some other people wrote,” Koy said. “Yes, I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up. You’re kidding me right? Slow down, I wrote some of these and they are the ones you are laughing at.”
In on particularly awkward moment, Koy quipped that the difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL was that there would be fewer camera cuts to Taylor Swift, who is currently dating Kansas City Chiefs footballer Travis Kelce. When the camera cut to Swift, her reaction was less than impressed, and went viral instantly.
Still, the show must go on, and go on it did! Going into the evening, Barbie and Succession were leading the film and television categories, respectively. Each title had nine nominations a piece. At the end of the evening, Barbie walked away with two wins, for Best Original Song, and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Meanwhile, Succession‘s final season took home the award for Best Drama Series, as well as acting wins for Kieran Culkin, Matthew Macfadyen, and Australia’s own Sarah Snook.
Oppenheimer went into the evening with eight nominations, and walked away with five wins, including Best Motion Picture — Drama, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and acting wins for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.
Over in television, The Bear and Beef also performed well. The Bear took home Best Comedy Series, as well as wins for stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, while Beef took home Best Limited Series and acting wins for Steven Yeun and Ali Wong.
Read on for the full list of winners, updating live throughout the show.
