Picnic in Style at This Versailles-Style Garden Just Outside Melbourne

The Garden at Broughton Hall

Just as Victoria edges closer to opening up, the most gorgeous picnic destination we could possibly dream of has popped up just outside of Melbourne.

Imagine living for a day in a manor with perfectly manicured gardens that you could spend hours on end in. Sounds lush, right? Well, you don’t have to imagine. You can experience it for yourself.

Designed by David Musker and his partner Philip Hunter, The Garden at Broughton Hall is an enchanting estate nestled in the rolling hills of West Gippsland, just over one hour from Melbourne.

Featuring 14 key sections of garden, which come together beautifully in a seamless flow, the garden is a place of horticultural wonder overlooking the man-made Tarago Reservoir.

Visitors can frolic with glamorous peacocks on the Upper Terrace and meditate in a haven of yellow and blue flowers in the Yellow Garden. Over in the Rose Garden, guests can bask in the scents of rare and colourful roses, and set up a picnic beneath an enormous lipstick maple in the Pink Garden, taking in the gorgeous lake views.

The Garden Room, a small Georgian-inspired cottage, invites visitors to take a moment to reset with an impressive collection of gardening books and enjoy cup of tea by the fire in winter. Guests can also take a piece of the garden home at Musker’s Nursey, bursting with a stunning selection of rare plants.

In addition to this masterpiece, Philip and David released their very own book this month, called The Charmed Garden at Broughton Hall, detailing their 25-year journey transforming the property from farm to fantasy.
