One of the many TV shows to get the reboot treatment is Frasier, the Cheers spinoff that saw Kelsey Grammar continue his role as Dr Frasier Crane — a highbrow, and slightly neurotic psychiatrist who hosts an advice radio show in Seattle.
The original series of Frasier, which also starred Jane Leeves, David Hyde Pierce, Peri Gilpin, and John Mahoney, ran for 11 seasons between 1993 and 2004, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series five years in a row.
According to Grammar, the revival should hopefully be on our screens in early 2022 when it debuts on Paramount Plus.
“We don’t actually have a date when we’re going to start filming,” the actor told Collider. “We’re still kind of breaking the story a little bit, we’re doing a polish now.
“When will we see a Frasier? Probably in the first quarter of next year.”
Grammer also answered questions about whether his fellow castmates would each be returning for the reboot, saying “We think we’re going to get most of the actors back, I’m certainly hopeful that we will, and I’m fairly confident that they’ll come back. I thought we should explore all their lives in their third act, and so that is my hope.”
Sadly Mahoney, who played Frasier’s father Martin Crane, will not appear in the new iteration, having passed away from complications from throat cancer in 2018 at the age of 77.
Grammer confirmed the news of a reboot earlier in 2021 in a statement saying, “Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I’d like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world.
“I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr Frasier Crane.”
The beloved comedy is one of many to get a modern makeover, following in the footsteps of shows from that era such as Roseanne — which was subsequently renamed The Connors after Roseanne Barr was fired for slinging a racial slur at Obama administration adviser Valerie Jarret — Will and Grace and Sex and the City.
Paramount Plus will launch in Australia on August 11, 2021, with a subscription fee costing A$8.99 per month and offering up 20,000 movies and TV episodes from Paramount Pictures and the Showtime, BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Smithsonian Channel and Sony Pictures Television labels.
