The most loved men in rock and roll, Foo Fighters, are dropping their first film in February and have given fans a small taste of what to expect with the first official trailer from Studio 666.
The spoof sees the group working on their tenth album in a seemingly haunted house with frontman Dave Grohl becoming possessed by supernatural forces that threaten the completion of the record and the lives of the band. In the film, Grohl finds himself creatively blocked until his possession gets his inspo flowing. Unfortunately, and hilariously, the blood flows too.
The films stars Foos members Grohl, Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffee, alongside Whitney Cummings, Will Forte, Jenna Ortega, Leslie Grossman and Jeff Garlin, with a cameo from Lionel Richie.
Studio 666 is based on a story by Grohl, but the rocker opted not to direct this project like he has directed many of the band’s video clips and several documentaries. Instead, the movie is helmed by director BJ McDonnell, who calls the finished result “a perfect combination of all things I love.”
“Rock, horror, and comedy all tied together in a very thrilling motion picture. I am so excited to have teamed up with the Foo Fighters to create an old school ‘band’ movie,” McDonnell said in a statement. “It’s been years since we’ve seen something like The Beatles Help!, the Monkees Head or Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park. Take that 60’s/70’s old-school band film fun, mix it with horror and Studio 666 is born! I am so ecstatic for audiences of film and music to come together and enjoy our film.”
Grohl has shown a talent for filmmaking over the last ten years with projects such as 2013’s Sound City, the HBO documentary miniseries, Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways and the recently released What Drives Us. In addition to that, the Foos are well known for their penchant for silly and fun music videos, as witnessed in the clips for tracks such as ‘Learn to Fly’, ‘Big Me’ and ‘Everlong’.
At the time of the film’s announcement, Grohl — who released his memoir The Storyteller in 2021 — explained the group’s inspiration for making the film, saying; “After decades of ridiculous music videos and numerous music documentaries under our collective belts, it was finally time to take it to the next level… A full-length feature horror-comedy film.
“Like most things Foo, Studio 666 began with a far-fetched idea that blossomed into something bigger than we ever imagined possible. Filmed at the same house where we recorded our latest album, Medicine at Midnight (told you that place was haunted!), we wanted to recapture the classic magic that all of our favourite rock and roll movies had, but with a twist: hilarious gore that fucking ROCKS… Be ready to laugh, scream, and headbang in your popcorn. Studio 666 will fuck you up.”
The film will be released in US cinemas on February 25th, but we are still waiting to find out how we Aussie’s can enjoy it too. Given Grohl’s deep (and reciprocal) love of Australia, always seemed unlikely that we would be excluded from accessing the movie and now we have confirmation that Studio 666 is coming to Australian cinemas from February 24 for a one-week special event season.
