So, Evan Rachel Wood Didn’t Exactly Love Cats

Look, personally, we loved Cats and were excited to go see the film because we’d heard it needs to be seen to be believed, and also because we simply love to know whats up. We love to participate in a cultural ~moment~, and that’s what Cats is all about! But this isn’t about us, this is about Westworld star Evan Rachel Wood’s Cats experience and the reason why she wasn’t a huge fan.

In a now-deleted Tweet, Evan wrote: “#Cats is actually worse than I thought it would be, And I already thought it would be horrible. But….I am actually speechless. Why would you change the choreography? I…am SPEECHLESS. It’s not the cast’s fault. Its…maybe the worst thing I have ever seen. Ever”.

Over in Instagram, her live-reaction video is still live, which you can watch below. Mostly, it’s Evan just screaming “WHAT THE F**K?!?” to herself, over and over again, completely  stunned.

Also on her story, she added a toned-down version of her deleted tweet, explaining her reaction to the film’s choices.

“They changed all the iconic choreography. Took out 70 percent of the main characters. Changed the plot,” she began. “I grew up in theatre. I was married to a dancer. I have massive respect for what they do, which is why this was such a letdown and missed opportunity for that community.”

Reeling herself back in, she ended her rant by adding: “Who cares what I say. Go see it and decide for yourself,” with the peace hand emoji.

One person who’s not going to be happy about this review is Cats actor (slash, RnB superstar) Jason DeRulo, who has responded to criticisms of the film by saying: “Any time you defy what an art form is, any time you defy all rules, there’s going to be some push-back, obviously. But it’s an incredible piece of art done by some of the best people in the world. I am just excited for the people to actually see it because reviewers, I mean, what the hell do they know? Have they made a film ever in their life?”

If you love musicals, we say go and get amongst it.
