Netflix’s Enola Holmes may have only just hit the streaming platform, but it’s already at number one on the charts worldwide.
The story of Sherlock Holmes’s sister, Enola, played by Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown is as refreshing as it is fun with a story that is suitable for all ages. With it proving to be very popular among audiences, could there already be a sequel on the way?
In an interview with Decider, director Harry Bradbeer revealed that there were ongoing discussions.
“There’s discussion. I can’t really say. It’d be crazy of me to say. I think we would love it if it would happen,” he said.
The film is based on a series of Young Adult novels by Nancy Springer and with six in the series, Bradbeer has plenty to work with.
“Well, I hope I’d have the energy for that, yeah. That would be amazing. Someone’s going to have the energy for it! It’d be wonderful to get five more movies out of this scene,” he said, before adding: “I do think they’re extraordinary stories to tell, and what a period.”
Although she never appeared in the Arthur Conan Doyle originals, the film’s creators manage to create a world where it feels like she always existed.
The most recent film centres around Enola (Brown) on the day of her sixteenth birthday, when she awakens to find her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has disappeared, leaving behind only some birthday gifts.
Enola meets her brothers, Mycroft (Sam Claflin) and Sherlock (Henry Cavill), who fail to recognize her at first, not having seen her in many years. She sets off to find her mother, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord (Louis Partridge).
If there is a second film, the production team will have to work around its very busy leading cast with Cavill working on a Witcher sequel and Brown, another season (we hope) of Stranger Things.
