I begin this article firmly stating that I love Drake. I ventured to Oakland on a more recent overseas trip just to watch him perform, I’ve hung out in a hotel room Drake hung out in (not at the same time) and I have limited-edition Scorpion merch hanging in my closet. But I digress.
In any other time, I’d be thrilled to get a look-in on the way Drake lives and the house he lives in. But right now? When the world is forced to stay home with many doing their best to go about their lives in the confines of four small walls; is that really the best time to show off an “eye-popping pleasure dome”, as his manor was referred to in the May issue of Architectural Digest?
Fans became curious to see more of the Toronto mansion after Drizzy showcased select spaces in his recent Toosie Slide music, and the follow-up cover story from the luxury magazine does not disappoint to document the finer details.
Dubbed The Embassy, the 4,650sqm home boasts an NBA regulation-sized basketball court, a custom bronze-and-solid-marble chandelier plus an additional light sculpture with 20,000 hand-cut Swarovski crystals.
There’s a master bed that weighs an actual ton and has an built-in whiskey and champagne bar in the headboard, a two-storey closet (where he keeps his collection of Hermes Birkin bags for his future wife), two sculptures by Kaws, and a one-of-a-kind grand piano in a 13m-high grand room, to name a few features.
We’ve poured over the pics, we’ll probably take a second look later, and we’ll watch the video on YouTube when it drops, but we have to admit the whole thing feels a bit on the nose for the current climate.
We can’t go to bars. Drake has a bar. We can’t visit museums. Drake’s home is a museum. I’d imagine staying home and self-isolating at Drake’s place would feel pretty different to how we’re living it up right now, and we’re so lucky to have a safe place to stay home, too. It hurts to think of the 2% of the world’s population who are living homeless right now.
I’m not alone to have some thoughts. The internet is roasting the rapper about his home as we speak — less so for the timing of the feature, and much more about his taste for interiors.
Drake’s home has all the charm of one of those luxury malls you have to walk through to get between hotels/casinos in Vegas.
