‘Sex and the City’ Is Going Ahead Without Samantha But How Will They Explain Her Absence?

SATC

Sex and the City is officially getting a revival on HBO Max (the blessed service that is bringing us the Friends reunion) and while Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristen Davis have all signed on to reprise their iconic roles, the series will be missing it’s fourth. Kim Cattrall.

Announcing the news on her Instagram, Parker — who played lead Carrie Bradshaw, shared a snippet of New York with the tagline: “And just like that, the story continues…”

With the news travelling far and wide, fans of the series applauded the revival, which will centre on the women as they navigate their 50s, however, there was one glaring question. What will they do with Samantha?

Arguably one of the most popular characters on the series, Samantha Jones was a “try-sexual” (she’d “try-anything”), exuded free love, was an empowered businesswoman and had a whole lotta body confidence, so why isn’t she coming back to do the series and what will they do with her character?

Cattrall’s feud with Parker, which played out on social media, was one of the reasons that a third SATC film was never made and feels like an obvious reason why she won’t be making an appearance. Although this is Hollywood, so we’re sure to be told that scheduling conflicts were to blame and yada, yada, yada.

The same day the series was announced, Parker took the opportunity to respond to fans on her Instagram account.

“Happy to see you back but will miss Kim/Samantha,” one fan wrote to which she replied, “We will too. We loved her so. X.”

Also putting to bed the rumours that have circled the show for years, she told another: “I don’t dislike her [Cattrall]. I’ve never said that. Never would. Samantha isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do. X.”

As for the character, we’re going to take a stab in the dark as what they’re going to do with her. Our first theory is that they’re going to address where she is in the first episode, telling us that she is in the UK, still, happy and in love with Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis) and both running some PR firm so far away, they couldn’t possibly visit due to the global pandemic.

This all sounds great, except, we’re not sure there will be another appearance from Samantha ever, so our second theory seems more fitting.

The series may well open to us being told that Samantha Jones has passed away. One of the main story arcs (and quite possibly the most humbling) was Samantha being diagnosed with breast cancer in the last season.

While we watched her battle the disease (and come out victorious) writers might use the arc again to explain why Samantha will be missing from brunch.

We’re betting they may even start the series at her funeral or the aftermath of, which will explain her absence early on. If this were the case, we know that the series will deal with her death elegantly, however, we’re still hoping she’s living her best 60s life (omg) in the UK with Smith.

As for the truth, we will have to wait and see what actually happens when the series is released in 2022.
