Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has announced a new album called FutureNever for 2022, following the successful release of his Spotify podcast Who Is Daniel Johns?.
Revealing the news via a letter, Johns explained that he hadn’t realised how much he had needed the experience of the podcast and that its reception had inspired him.
“I’m not anxious about what comes next anymore, I’m ready for the FutureNever,” he wrote.
He continued, “FutureNever is my new album, it is coming out April 1st, 2022, and is available for pre-order now. This time I’m doing things on my own terms, FutureNever will be the first album I release on my own label via a new global deal with my friends at BMG.”
Johns says that he will not be releasing singles from the record as it is “designed to be enjoyed as an album.”
“Call me a hopeless romantic but that’s the benefit of releasing music on your own label,” he explained. “Nobody can tell you what to do.”
The artist also revealed that the podcast had helped him heal from his past and that he is ready to “tackle this new world bravely.”
Describing FutureNever as an eclectic mix of music, Johns said that a few of his mates would be appearing on the record and that he would be slowly revealing them in the lead up to the release along with a host of other surprises he said he was excited to share with fans.
At the age of just 15, Johns was the face and frontman of one of Australia’s biggest musical exports, with Silverchair releasing five studio albums between 1995 – 2007, all of which debuted at #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart and achieved in excess of 10 million sales worldwide.
The band, which also consisted of drummer Ben Gillies and bassist, Chris Joannou, burst onto the scene in 1994 with their gritty hit single ‘Tomorrow’ and have since sold over six million albums worldwide.
Johns, who subsequently went on to enjoy solo success as well as with The Dissociatives and DREAMS, was the first songwriter in history to win the prestigious APRA ‘Songwriter of the Year’ award on three separate occasions, and in 2016 also won a Grammy for co-writing Flume’s ‘Say It’ featuring Tove Lo.
The singer has always remained fairly private when it comes to his personal life, making his recent podcast all the more intriguing. Over the course of the six episodes, Johns discusses the impact of fame on his personal life and how it affected his ability as an artist.
FutureNever is available to pre-order now.
