Can you believe it has been twenty years since cult classic Coyote Ugly premiered in cinemas?
On August 4, 2000, the film opened to mediocre reviews, however, somehow managed to become one of the most popular films of the year.
If you ask us, being the year of the movie sequel, it’s about time we see what Violet (Piper Perabo), Kevin (Australia’s Adam Garcia) and Zoe (Tyra Banks) have been up to — and Banks completely agrees.
In a new interview with US entertainment outlet, Variety, the America’s Top Model host said she had been “lobbying” to do another instalment for years.
“I’ve had a passion to do a sequel to ‘Coyote Ugly’ for some time now,” she told the outlet.
“I’ve even reached out to [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer and the team and the original writer and they’ve had some jam sessions on what it could possibly be.”
Banks even feels that there should be “some type of rallying cry to social media” or a “petition to get people to sign to make the sequel”.
“I actually really want to produce it. We have really been wanting to do that and even had a form of treatment with the original writer. And even [Diane] Warren, who did the original music with [LeAnne] Rimes, is super passionate about this.”
Co-star Perabo is also on-board for the sequel and told Variety: “When Tyra and I were DMing, I was like, ‘We have to really think about it,’ because obviously we’re all 20 years older and we have to rethink the story,” however, she’d love to see her character running the iconic Coyote Ugly bar 20 years later.
Coyote Ugly told the story of Violent Sandford (Perabo), a young, struggling songwriter headed to New York City to make it big.
Needing a job, she auditions to be a bartender in the Coyote Ugly bar, where she becomes a Coyote.
Starring alongside Banks and Perabo was Garcia, who played her love interest Kevin as well as Maria Bello, who played the owner of the bar Liliana Lovell. Izabella Miko and Bridget Moynahan played the other bartenders while John Goodman played Violet’s father and Melanie Lynskey her best friend. All of these actors were either already famous in their own right, or this film helped leverage their careers.
Undoubtedly, one of the most famous things to come out of the film was LeeAnne Rime’s 2001 hit, Can’t Fight the Moonlight.
On a local level, the song reached number one and was the highest-selling single in Australia in 2001. Warren, who Banks referred to earlier, wrote the mega-hit, as well as Rimes’ How Do I Live, which was made famous by Trisha Yearwood for Nicolas Cage’s Con Air.
Can’t Fight the Moonlight was performed in the film by Perabo.
We’re 100% on board with a Coyote Ugly reunion.
