It feels that no one really could have ever predicted the global coronavirus pandemic, because if we had, a solution or vaccine could have been found sooner rather than later.
However, as we adjust to our new reality for the foreseeable future, many have been finding signs in pop culture that has lead them to believe that COVID-19 had been foreseen many times before.
From Psychic Sylvia Browne’s 2008 book reference, where she correctly predicted that “around 2020, a severe pneumonia-like illness will spread throughout the globe,” to the 1981 Dean Koontz novel which referred to a “Wuhan Virus”.
But nothing could prepare Twitter users for the eerie comparison to fictional a land far, far away from the Disney movie, Tangled.
In fact, just wait until you hear the similarities!
In the 2010 kids film, which was based on the fairytale Rapunzel, a princess with magical hair of eternal youth is kidnapped by an evil witch (Mother Gothel) and locked up in a tower.
And this is where the similarities begin.
While we’re not sporting magical hair, quarantine and self-isolation feel quite similar to being locked in a tower — and just like Rapunzel, we are currently practising social distancing.
And like everyone during isolation, Repunzel spends her time going through a long list of things she does to keep herself occupied.
In the song, When Will My Life Begin, she details cleaning, laundry, reading, painting, knitting, playing the guitar, cooking, doing puzzles, darts, baking, ballet, chess, stretching and sewing (just to name a few) as ways to pass the time — and throw in some Netflix and she’s just described my weekend.
But, perhaps the most uncanny comparison of all, is the Kingdom in which Repunzel is from.
Wait for it… Corona.
Twitter user Tina took to Twitter with a screenshot from the film, asking: “Is this why Mother Gothen quarantined Rapunzel for 18 years in the movie Tangled…?[sic]”
