Fans of ‘Community’ Get Excited, The Stars are Ready to Make a Movie

Community

When all six seasons of Community dropped on Netflix in April, within the first few days, fans had put it in the top ten around the globe; so it’s no wonder, that a film announcement could be imminent.

During a reunion special to raise money to support COVID-19 relief, the cast, alongside creator Dan Harmon, got together for a table read of Cooperative Polygraphy — a season five episode of the cult series, followed by a fan Q&A session.

When answering the question about a movie, Donald Glover a.k.a Childish Gambino danced around the topic saying: “We can’t make movies right now,” referring of course to Hollywood being shut down during the global pandemic, however, said he was “game” for such a film to happen.

His co-stars, including Joel McHale, also expressed their desire for a film to happen, however, quipped that Glover (who has a flourishing music, TV and film career) might be “too busy” to join in.

Glover, however, recognised the want for such a project, ever since it had landed back on the streaming service.

“Watching it now, I’m like, ‘Oh, this show’s really punk,’” he said during the session. “Really subversive and like kind of punk. We had so much fun and now I’m like, ‘I want to watch this show again like it was brand new.’”

Even creator Harmon has found a new appreciation for the college sitcom now that it has been off the air for five years.

“When I watch the episodes now, I have these waves come over me of like, first of all, my writers were amazing and probably didn’t get rewarded for it as much as maybe I thought the job was, but second… the whole cast is just like a machine on a basketball court that automatically slam dunks everything that you put onto the court.

“We’ve all had enough success individually that we all know it doesn’t get any better,” he added.

Gillian Jacobs, who played Britta Perry, said it was incredibly “special” to be a part of the show.

“I think we were lucky to realize that it was special while we were doing it, which you don’t always know it’s good times when the good times are happening. I just get more sentimental as the years go on.”

The cast spent the majority of the Q&A reminiscing about their time as a unit, all offering the same sentiment — they wouldn’t have wanted to do the show with anyone else.

Everything between us was so sweet,” Alison Brie, who played uptight Annie Edison, said. “I felt like I was always sort of learning from everyone. Everyone’s different styles. And that evolved over seasons until we all had this sense of humour together. And anyone who came in we’d be like, ‘sorry, we have inside jokes.”
