‘Australian Survivor’ Is Heading to Cloncurry, Queensland — Bringing 150 Jobs With It

Reality competition series Australian Survivor will return in 2021, and this time, the show is keeping it local.

Much like other reality series that pivoted to be filmed in the land Down Under instead of their usual overseas locations — think I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! and The Amazing Race — Survivor will be filmed right here in the great southern land.

Hosted by Jonathan LaPaglia, the first five seasons of the popular Network 10 series were filmed in Samoa and Fiji but, thanks to COVID, the contestants will have to face the many challenges the unique Australian terrain provides.

The sixth season is being filmed in Cloncurry which is in northwest Queensland, so the castaways will be swapping that sweet sea breeze, sun-kissed sand and swaying palms for the outback. It doesn’t get much more Aussie than that!

Screen Queensland CEO Kylie Munnich told ABC News how thrilled she was to have the series being filmed locally saying, “This show has always been filmed overseas either in Fiji or Samoa, so to bring it back to Australia, to Queensland, and more importantly to see it in Cloncurry is a big deal for us. If you’ve ever watched the show, it’s huge.”

A hot spot on Burke and Wills’s inland expedition back in 1861, it’s also the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor’s service and situated next door to ghost town Mary Kathleen.

With its rich history and epic landscape that includes iconic red dirt, towering rock formations and spectacular fresh water dams, Cloncurry is the perfect place to really change things up.

While sand everywhere may not be the biggest gripe this season, there will be bigger challenges and a different set of skills put to our castaways to the ultimate test.

In a press statement, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the show would boost the state’s economy by around $14.6 million and create 150 jobs for crew members. “The positive impacts flowing from our production boom are vast and varied,” she said.
