Two years in the making, The Capitol Hotel in Sydney’s Haymarket unveiled its extensive renovation in October, though it soft-launched in March.
Steps from the Capitol Theatre, which is currently showing ‘Beauty and the Beast’, the hotel is an easy choice for those who are seeing a show but are coming from out of state or those who live in Sydney and want to make a staycation around it.
“Before undergoing refurbishment, the hotel was a typical 3.5-star establishment,” says Brad Worker, the hotel’s general manager. “The Mah family of MKH Properties were inspired by the rich history of the area and the Capitol Theatre.”
The hotel’s building once housed a produce market called Belmore Markets, a circus, and a hippodrome. Today, in addition to the Capitol Theatre, it’s also near Chinatown, Paddy’s Markets, World Square and short tram ride from Circular Quay.
Andrea D’Cruz is behind the hotel’s interior design, using a colour palette of teal, gold, sage, and red to convey the theme of ‘theatre’. Velvet floor-to-ceiling curtains also hang in the ground floor. Each of the hotel’s four floors was assigned a colour scheme, complemented by artwork in the same hues.
The transformed hotel features 95 rooms in 11 configurations, fitting for solo travellers through to rooms catering for up to seven guests. Rooms are equipped with tablets instead of phones, which you can use to contact the concierge or find out hotel or local area information. They’re also fitted with double-glazed windows so, despite the tram passing right outside, you won’t hear a thing.
Statement pillows on the beds display scenes from Disney film favourites like Mary Poppins and Winnie the Pooh. On every door is a design of a winking face.
The hotel is also home to the Capitol Kitchen and Bar, near the lobby of the hotel. Aside from serving buffet breakfast, which you can add to your room rate, it also serves a lounge menu 12pm to 9pm, the likes of pizzas, charcuterie and four-cheese arancini.
Aside from its proximity to The Capitol Theatre, not to mention Sydney’s CBD, and its similar feel to a theatre, the hotel’s strongest drawcard is easily its rate. A standard room starts at an affordable $200 a night.
