What happens when you’re a teen and didn’t know you were pregnant until you deliver the baby? Well, you’re about to find out in new Stan original, Bump.
The 10-part series, which premieres on New Year’s Day on Stan, centres around Oly (Nathalie Morris, Black Christmas), an ambitious and high-achieving teenage girl who has a surprise baby; and the complications that ensue for two families.
Set in and around a high school in contemporary inner Sydney and following the main character’s home, the show explores unexpected motherhood, unwelcome new relatives, and unintended consequences with humour and emotional honesty.
After collapsing at school in agony, Oly must face the harsh reality that she is about to have a baby. After its birth, and in deep shock, Oly rejects the baby entirely. If she doesn’t acknowledge the baby, then she doesn’t have to acknowledge how her life has irrevocably changed, or that the baby’s father is not her boyfriend.
In fact, the father of her child is Santiago (‘Santi’) Hernandez (Carlos Sanson Jr), the laid-back son of the school Chilean soccer coach Matias (Ricardo Scheihing-Vasquez). The two families — Hernandez and Chalmers — clash over differing expectations of family obligations and with Oly’s parents Angie (Claudia Karvan) and Domon (Angus Sampson) on the brink of separation already, the arrival of the baby sets off each family in different ways.
Starring Australian staple, Claudia Karvan (The Other Guy) as Oly’s mum, Angie (who also serves as producer), Bump is described as “sharply funny” and a fast-paced relationship drama.
Alongside Karvan (who also serves as producer), Morris and the key cast, the series stars a diverse cast of fresh and exciting talent including, Catalina Palma, Safia Arain, Paula Garcia, Ioane Saula, Peter Thurnwald and Ricardo Scheihing Vasquez.
The series is created and co-written by Kelsey Munro; with the writing team also consisting of Jessica Tuckwell, Timothy Lee, Mithila Gupta and Steven Arriagada and sharing the directing duties are Geoff Bennett (Stan’s Wolf Creek), Gracie Otto (The Other Guy) and Leticia Caceres (The True History of Billie the Kid).
All episodes of the Stan Original Series Bump premiere New Year’s Day, only on Stan.
