The 2021 Billboard Music Awards announced some of its winners offline, with The Weeknd scooping up seven — a notable difference from the Grammy Awards at which the artist was snubbed entirely.
The Blinding Lights singer was named top male artist, top radio songs artist, top R&B artist and top R&B male artist among his many accolades, which were announced before the live show which was hosted by Nick Jonas.
The late Pop Smoke — who you might recall as being a favourite artist of Married at First Sight alum Coco Stedman — also did well for himself, winning four off-air awards, including top new artist, top rap artist, top rap male artist and top rap album for his posthumously released debut, Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon.
Controversially, country artist Morgan Wallen took home three nods — despite a video circulating in February that showed him using the N-word. Wallen apologised for his actions, however, he was excluded from participating at the award show with event producer Dick Clark Productions saying that “his recent conduct does not align with our core values, [and therefore] we will not be including him on the show in any capacity (performing, presenting, accepting).
“It is heartening and encouraging to hear that Morgan is taking steps in his anti-racist journey and starting to do some meaningful work. We plan to evaluate his progress and will consider his participation in future shows.”
Meanwhile, during the live portion of the annual award show, P!NK will receive the distinguished ICON award, and Drake is receiving the prestigious Artist of the Decade Award — he holds the record for the most BBMAs in history with 27, so it’s safe to say he deserves it.
