The Pixel 6a Is Out Now — These Are the Best Plans For the Budget-Friendly Phone

The chalk, sage and charcoal Google Pixel 6a phones.

Google’s latest offering is the Pixel 6a, a mid-range $749 smartphone with the same processor as the premium Pixel 6 and 6 Pro but in a smaller body, and with a much smaller price tag.

Its closest competition is the iPhone SE, and if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like the idea of paying a premium price tag for a slightly bigger screen and a few more megapixels in the camera, it’s hard to look past the 6a. Even compared to the Pixel 6 Pro ($1,299), which is almost double the price, the 6a holds its ground. Take a look at the top-line specs to see what we’re dealing with:

Google Pixel 6a Specs:

Display: 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED, up to 60Hz

Memory and storage: 6GB (RAM) and 128GB (storage)

Rear camera: 12.2MP (wide), 12MP (ultrawide)

Front camera: 8MP

Processor: Google Tensor

Price: $749

Google Pixel 6 Pro Specs:

Display: 6.7-inch QHD+ Smooth Display, up to 120Hz

Memory and storage: 12GB (RAM) and 128GB, 256GB or 512GB (storage)

Rear camera: 50MP (wide), 12MP (ultrawide), 48MP (telephoto)

Front camera: 11.1MP

Processor: Google Tensor

Optus, Telstra and Vodafone all offer competitive plans for the Pixel 6a, and each telco is offering a different sign-up bonus. Optus is discounting the handset by $150, which takes the price down to $599 over the course of a 36-month plan. That’s better than Telstra’s discount, which is only $100. Vodafone, on the other hand, is paying out an extra $200 of trade-in credit when you sign up for a 6a plan. That’s on top of whatever credit you’d normally get, which is $520 for the Pixel 6 Pro, for instance, and $740 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Of course, if you buy the 6a outright then you can choose whichever plan you like. These are the cheapest SIM-only plans with at least 20GB that you can get in Australia right now:
