We Did the Math to Find Out How to Turn 22 Annual Leave Days Into 57 in 2023

Yes, we still have four more months to go before the new year, but if you want to get the maximum time off in 2023 (who doesn’t?), now’s the time to start thinking about it. Because while we’re entitled to 20 days of annual leave per year, if you’re strategic with them, and willing to take off an extra two days, you can turn 22 days into a whopping 57.

How, you ask? Well, we’ve spent hours poring over a calendar, doing the holiday hacking for you.

Below, we’re letting you in on the secret, and sharing the exact dates you should take off, effectively allowing you to more than double your annual leave in 2023.

December 2022/January 2023 

Book three days of annual leave for a 10-day holiday. 

Make the most of the Christmas and New Year break by booking three days of annual leave in the week that follows the festive season. Because Christmas and New Year’s Day falls on a weekend in 2022, we’re given three public holidays – for Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day – during the week instead.

Travel between:
Saturday, December 24 – Monday, January 2

Book these dates:
Wednesday, December 28
Thursday, December 29
Friday, December 30

January 2023

Book four days of annual leave for a nine-day holiday. 

Book cleverly around the Australia Day public holiday, which, this year, falls on a Thursday, by taking annual leave either side.

Travel between:
Saturday, January 21 – Sunday, January 29

Book these dates:
Monday, January 23
Tuesday, January 24
Wednesday, January 25
Friday, January 27

April 2023

Book four days off around Easter for a 10-day holiday. Or book 11 days off for a 19-day holiday. 

Make the most of the last warm days by booking time off around Good Friday and Easter Monday to get an extended break. Or book around Easter and Anzac Day to get over half a month off.

December 2023/January 2024

Expert tip: Take off the rest of the week after Monday, January 1 to make it a 16-day holiday.
