The line between what we consider “men’s fashion” and “women’s fashion” is becoming increasingly blurred, and we are so here for it. With nearly identical streetwear styles for both genders, brighter patterns for men, and more structured silhouettes for women, there is now much less of delineation between what counts as menswear and womenswear than there has been ever before.
There are a number of celebrities taking the reins and acclimating the rest of us to the trend. On red carpets and in everyday life, it seems as though the androgynous clothing trend is popular amongst Hollywood’s elite.
When it comes to trying new trends, it sometimes takes a bit of inspiration to get the ball rolling. Here, we’re featuring some of the most fashionable celebrities who are showing us how to pull off the androgynous look. Keep reading to see who’s wearing it well and get a few ideas for your next favourite outfit.
Harry Styles
Long praised for his androgynous taste, the singer recently spoke about it in an interview with The Guardian. “What women wear. What men wear. For me it’s not a question of that,” Styles shared. “It’s not just clothes where lines have been blurred, it’s going across so many things. I think you can relate it to music, and how genres are blurring…”
Timothée Chalamet
A fashion fanatic, Chalamet’s unique look has long been tied to his cool-guy persona. In 2018, the start did an interview for VMan saying that “fashion has been really fun, just as a fan. I don’t want to work with a stylist or anything. I’ve been following designers like Raf, Haider Ackermann, Hedi Slimane — these guys are like rock stars.” Even without a stylist, he constantly looks great on and off the red carpet.
Cara Delevigne
Despite her supermodel status, Delevigne has always had quite androgynous style off the runway. With the perfect combination of edgy and chic the model consistently pulls off outfits that the rest of us haven’t even dreamed of yet. Between wearing tuxedos to big events and her classic T-shirt and jeans combo, her style is always blurring the lines of gender norms.
Tilda Swinton
Quite possibly the reigning master of androgynous style, Tilda Swinton is one of fashion’s favourite style stars — and for good reason: She’s just so unique. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, she told the magazine a bit about what’s in her closet: “Boys’ shirts, three kilts, an extended family of jerseys, some of which I’ve had since school, Horiyoshi the Third and Bella Freud cardigans and scarves, three highly prized Sybil Connolly skirts for dancing, Liwan nightshirts, summer dresses, and general Lebanese menswear.”
