We Dreamcasted Who Should Play Caroline Calloway and Natalie Beach

Caroline Galloway

Ever since The Cut released its must-read longform about Instagram influencer and alleged scammer Caroline Calloway and her former co-writer and best friend Natalie Beach, written by Beach herself, we’ve been dreamcasting the inevitable limited series or film in our minds.

In fact, according to Calloway, there will be two competing projects released in the future. Calloway has said that while she will be selling her life rights, Beach has already sold the rights to the article to Ryan Murphy.

With two projects in the works, we thought we’d indulge ourselves this afternoon and spend a little time dreamcasting our ideal Carolines and Natalies. Join us, won’t you?

The Caroline Calloway Shortlist

Ah, Caroline. Creative genius and businesswoman, or drug-addicted scammer and toxic best friend? How about all of the above? None of the above? Some of the above? There’s no doubt that there’s a lot going on in the character of Caroline, between the way she sees herself and the way others see her.

Already in every Ryan Murphy project around, Emma Roberts looks great with a flower crown and does a good job playing an unhinged lunatic (See: Scream Queens), which would come in handy while dealing with the adderall years.

Elle Fanning

Elle has that ethereal spirit that would be perfect for playing Caroline, as well as the acting chops to take on darker work as well, like she has done in The Neon Demon and The Beguiled.

Kathryn Newton

Since appearing in Big Little Lies, Kathryn Newton has been everywhere, from Blockers to Detective Pikachu and Netflix’s The Society. With no sign of slowing down anytime soon, Kathryn who happens to look quite a lot like Caroline, would be a great pick.

Kristine Froseth

Co-starring with Kathryn Newton on Netflix’s The Society, Kristine is a model, as well as an actress, who has been making a name for herself with Looking For Alaska and The Truth About The Harry Quebert Affair.

This is something everyone in the press keeps getting wrong: Natalie was NOT the ghostwriter behind my Instagram. Okay? We CO-WROTE captions together six years ago for one year only: 2013. This was before my Instagram took off. THEN I went to Cambridge and began writing my own stuff. The stories that built my brand I wrote MYSELF. I only had a couple tens of thousands of fake followers when Natalie and I wrote together for my Instagram. She was the ghostwriter of my BOOK PROPOSAL. This is the document we sold to publishers. She was a ghostwriter in the sense that she did work, but her name was not on the document. But she was NOT a ghostwriter in the traditional sense that she wrote my story alone while I did nothing. WE CO-WROTE SCHOOL GIRL. Half her words. Half mine. The stories I wrote about Cambridge on my Instagram that built the audience that brought us here? That was me. Please enjoy this photo of Natalie and me, very bleary-eyed and weary, sitting on the floor of a ferry in Sicily after getting trapped on a volcanic island because of wind. Natalie was not the ghostwriter behind my Instagram captions. NATALIE WAS NOT THE GHOSTWRITER BEHIND MY INSTAGRAM CAPTIONS.

As for our Natalies, we’re looking for someone who can play insecure within themselves, someone who is swept up by Caroline’s charisma and world, to a point where it’s detrimental to our Natalie. Here are our picks.

Gideon Adlon

Yes, this is another cast member from The Society, but look, it just has a really good cast, okay?! Gideon also co-starred in Blockers with Kathryn Newton, so why not team them up for a third project together?!

Anya Taylor-Joy

Star of The Witch and Peaky Blinders, we think Anya Taylor-Joy could do a fantastic job playing the smart-but-insecure Natalie.

Julia Goldani Telles

After starring in the cancelled-too-soon Bunheads, Julia has been keeping busy with her roles on The Affair and The Girlfriend Experience. We think she’d be perfect at playing Natalie as both women fought to prove themselves as the alpha in their friendship.

Kaitlyn Dever

The star of Booksmart and Netflix’s Unbelievable, Kaitlyn Dever is having an incredible year, and signing on to play Natalie opposite any one of our Carolines would surely make for a great start to 2020.
