Award season is in full swing, and after a year off the air, the Golden Globes are making their comeback in 2023.

Once considered a major precursor award for the Academy Awards, the 2022 Golden Globes took place in a private ceremony with no audience or nominees in attendance.

In 2021, the Globes and its voting body, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, were broadly criticised for having no Black members and for engaging in a number of questionable financial practices. Although the awards body promised a number of reforms, NBC declined to air the 2022 ceremony in the United States.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a statement to Variety at the time. “However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organisation executes its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

Despite the fact that the HFPA still has not reached its initial promise to include 13% Black members by the 2022 Golden Globes, which is one of the reasons NBC canned it in the first place, NBC announced in September that it would be airing the Golden Globes once more.

“We recognise the HFPA’s commitment to ongoing change and look forward to welcoming back the Golden Globes to NBC for its landmark 80th Anniversary in January 2023,” Frances Berwick, chairman of entertainment networks for NBC, said in a statement.

As it stands, the HFPA includes a 10% Black voting body, up from… zero.

The success of the new and improved Golden Globes remains to be seen, but as it stands, it seems that many of Hollywood’s A-Listers will be in attendance come Wednesday.

One star who has confirmed he won’t be in attendance is Brendan Fraser, who is nominated for Best Actor in a Drama for his work in The Whale.

In a GQ profile published in 2018, Fraser accused former HFPA president Philip Berk of sexually assaulting him. Berk denied the accusation, and the HFPA stated that Berk’s actions were intended as a joke and therefore no action would be taken.

“No, I will not participate… It’s because of the history that I have with them,” Fraser told GQ of the 2023 ceremony. “And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me a lot of things, but not that.”

If anything’s certain, it’s that the Golden Globes have a lot to prove, and there’s only one way to see how it all plays out…
