Hit the Road: See Australia With the Airbnb of Van Rentals

The great Australian road trip: It’s an experience we all need, nay deserve, after a year spent mostly indoors.

While the Government’s half-price airline ticket scheme is one way to see Australia on a budget, to those with a little more time on their hands and a desire to really see more of our beautiful backyards, there’s no better way to do so than with a slow road trip.

And there are many benefits to hitting the road. It’s cheaper than flying, allows you to get better acquainted with lesser-explored parts of the country, and is a far more sustainable travel option — especially when you offset your road emissions.

Now, there are new sites helping you do all of the above. Working in a similar way to Airbnb, two emerging Australian platforms are allowing you to rent luxe campervans and motorhomes suitable to families, solo travellers, couples, and people with pets.

First up, Camptoo. The Australian company gives vehicle owners the chance to rent out their campervans and motorhomes to itchy-footed road-trippers. Whether you’re looking for a quaint van for the weekend or a home on wheels for the school holidays, you’ll find it right here, as well as pop-up caravans and everything in between.

“We love the freedom of travelling with a campervan. Our goal is to let people share the joy and fun of travelling with a campervan or caravan at their own pace. Because we think there is no better way to explore our beautiful country,” Camptoo says on its site.

Camptoo has vehicles all around the country, in almost every state and accessible from the major cities. You can rent for the night, starting at around $50, or for longer. It’s really up to the owners as to how long you can hit the road for.

Camplify is another platform helping Aussies hit the ground running. “We’re safely connecting holidaymakers with thousands of unique neighbourhood vans that are available to hire for their next outdoor adventure,” it says on the platform.

All hires come with hire insurance and NRMA roadside assist to ensure smooth sailing (read: driving), and while Camplify also has a huge range of vehicles in Australia, the platform now has a global community in the UK, NZ and Spain.
