Big salaries, strong job security and plenty of opportunities — these are a few of the perks of a tech job. Fortunately, there are lots of them on offer, with the recent report ‘The Guide to the IT Professions’ finding that the number of IT jobs grew 14% over the last five years, second only to healthcare’s 21%.
The research was conducted by ACS — the professional association for Australia’s tech sector — in partnership with Lightcast, the world’s leading labour analytics firm, and analysed millions of job postings in Australia since 2016.
Key findings included that cyber security job postings had doubled over five years; most of the IT roles were in NSW, Victoria and Canberra and that employers were demanding soft skills like communication, teamwork and planning as much as technical skills.

“The Guide to the IT Professions report highlights the great opportunities in the technology sector and just how strong the competition for talent now is,” says ACS Vice-President Jo Dalvean. “For employers, the report shows how important it is to establish alternative pathways into the industry beyond IT related degrees. Some of the sector’s best talent doesn’t come through traditional career progression.”
Dalvean also went on to say that for tech students and workers, the report shows the potential in emerging tech. Regardless of what you’re currently studying or the field you’re qualified in, there are great career opportunities in the coming years, he says. It’s also good to use as a guide for workers, students and employers looking ahead to where they should be investing their talent.
So, what are the most prevalent jobs in tech right now? According to the report, ahead are the 20 most popular, along with how many job ads for them were spotted.
