20 of the Most Popular Dog and Cat Names of 2022 (Hint: Most Are Human Names)

Pet Circle has released a list of the most popular and unique names that Australians have given their furry friends in 2022, as well as the most popular breeds. Topping the list of names for both dogs and cats born last year was Luna, which also held the top spot in 2021.

Pet owners are increasingly choosing names for their pets that are similar to popular baby names in Australia, says Australian vet Dr. Teagan Lever. In fact, interestingly, 60% of Pet Circle’s top 20 dog and cat names are on parenting site BabyCentre Australia’s top 100 baby names in 2022.

In addition to more common names like Charlie and Bella, the Pet Circle’s team came across some truly unusual pet names, including Hiccup, Marshmallow, Olaf, Moo, Wombat, Cerberus, Toast, Colin the Relentless, and even a cat named Principessa D’affettuoso which means affectionate princess.

When it comes to dog breeds, the most popular breeds born last year were the Cavoodle, followed by the Golden Retriever, Border Collie, Labrador, and Dachshund. For cats, the top three breeds born last year were Domestic Short-hair, Ragdoll, and Domestic Medium-hair.

Dr. Teagan notes that as pets become more like family members, there is a growing trend toward pet products that cater to specific breeds’ needs. This includes breed-specific pet food, treats, and supplements, toys for specific breed groups, and harnesses and clothing for different-shaped dogs like Greyhounds, French Bulldogs, and Dachshunds.
