Add This Newly-Created Coastal Walk 2 Hours Outside Sydney to Your Weekend Plans

Tomaree Coastal Walk

Just in time for the weekend, NSW walkers now have another walk to explore, in the form of a newly created 27km-long path two hours’ drive from Sydney.

The path, Tomaree Coastal Walk on Worimi Country in Port Stephens’ Tomaree National Park can be walked in sections, in a choose-your-own-adventure situation, with many entry and exit points along the route.

Or, if you’re wanting to tackle all of it, allow for two or three days, staying in your choice of a range of accommodation at local coastal villages along the way.

The track weaves along the coastline of the national park, guiding walkers over headlands, across rock ledges and through angophora forests, before they arrive at the Southern Hemisphere’s largest mobile sand dunes, located at Worimi Conservation Lands.

Walkers will be treated to newly-made lookouts, empty beaches and coves and fascinating rock formations, as well as all kinds of flora and fauna, including birds, dolphins and seasonal migrating whales.

The walk features new signage and digital storytelling elements so visitors can learn about the park’s cultural and environmental values. New artwork at Birubi Point Aboriginal Place celebrates the ancient heritage of Worimi Country.

The new track is part of a $6.7 million Tomaree Coastal Walk project, which saw NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) upgrading existing walking tracks, like popular Tomaree Head Summit walk, linking track sections and lookouts, upgrading visitor precincts and improving car parking.

The project’s aim is to support the local economy by providing a new and updated nature-based tourism offering to attract visitors to Port Stephens outside of the peak summer season. It’s also designed to encourage visitors to experience and enjoy new, otherwise hard-to-get-to sections of Tomaree National Park.

Walkers are encouraged to research and plan a safe adventure before setting out on the Tomaree Coastal Walk by visiting the NSW National Parks website.
