The Standard Hotel Is Ready to Give Australia’s Hotel Scene a Run for Its Money

The Standard hotel Melbourne

A rooftop restaurant, Thai eatery and shop with sunscreens, sodas and snacks will feature at Australia’s first hotel by The Standard when it opens in Melbourne next February. The hospitality group, which already has seven locations around the world, including in New York, Miami, London and Bangkok, will open in Fitzroy, with 125 rooms, two venues and a retail space.

A twist on the standard, well, The Standard, the hotel will take on a The StandardX concept, described in a press release as “the rebellious younger sibling of The Standard” with “minimalist rooms, complemented by come-hither cultural programming”.

The StandardX, Melbourne will be designed by Melbourne interior design firm Hecker Guthrie. The company took inspiration from Fitzroy in the ‘70s and ‘80s, when artists like Nick Cave, Ollie Olsen and Stuart Grand established the Little Band scene, which saw experimental post-punk bands taking to small venues and pubs throughout St Kilda and Fitzroy. The two decades were also when experimental art, music and culture flourished in the area.

Walking into the hotel through a bold revolving door, you’ll be greeted with an airy lobby with a fireplace, columns wrapped in macrame by local artist Sarah Smalltown and paintings by Dane Lovette. Work from another local artist Jane Sinclair, as well as pieces by others who live in the area are also displayed.

The hotel’s 125 rooms range in size from Cosy King to Suite Spot and are spread across eight floors. Rooms feature a blue and white colour palette and a millwork ledge that works as a writing corner or open closet, as well as views of Fitzroy and the city.

The Roof is the hotel’s rooftop restaurant, open only to hotel guests. Created by Executive Chef Justin Dingle-Garciyya, its menu was inspired by Mercado Medellin, a popular market in Mexico City, and includes tacos and ceviche.

The hotel’s other restaurant is Bang, an all-day Thai eatery, focusing on street food dishes. Finally, the hotel will house a store called The Box, which will sell everyday essentials and lifestyle items, as well as snacks and drinks.

Average rooms for The StandardX, Melbourne will range from $250 to $350. The first The Standard hotel opened in Hollywood in 1999, and while that property has now closed, it now has seven others. Development plans are underway for The Standard hotels in locations including Singapore, Pattaya, Lisbon, Brussels and Vancouver. The StandardX brand hotels will soon be in Bangkok, Brooklyn and East Austin.
