If you’ve ever watched even one episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and have felt extreme satisfaction from Khloe’s cookie jars then Netflix’s new series, The Home Edit, is going to feel like organisation porn.
In this new series, expert home organisers Clea and Joanna from the Instagram account, The Home Edit, help clients (including a huge celebrity contingent) edit, categorise and contain their clutter to create stunning spaces.
From the aforementioned Kardashian to Reese Witherspoon, Rachel Zoe, Eva Longoria and Neil Patrick Harris, the organisation duo give us an inside peek into the kitchens and wardrobes of the rich and famous.
But it’s not just celebrities that need help. Each episode, Clea and Joanna lend their expertise to regular, everyday people.
The series has also served as a guide for viewers to also organise their lives and these are just some of our favourite tips.
☆ Set your goals and intentions
Before you start any project, set your goal because in Clea’s eyes, getting started without a plan can spell disaster.
The best thing to do is look at your routine, including why and how you use the space, and how you want it to function.
In the case of Witherspoon, she wanted to take all of her costumes and gowns from her biggest films and events and display them in a (walk-in) closet. That way, they wouldn’t get dusty or mouldy and she can see them whenever she wanted.
☆ Trust the editing process
Getting rid of things that don’t spark joy (thank you, Marie Kondo) can be difficult because we’ve all been to the “I might need that for later” place.
But editing out what you really don’t need will make room for the things that you do. So trust in the process.
Their system does call for you to take everything out before organising, but it makes for an easier edit.
☆ Categorise, categorise, categorise
This is one of the coolest things the ladies do. Put everything into categories. If it’s your kitchen — baking in one spot, cooking in the other and cereals in the other. If it’s your iconic costumes from award-winning films and TV, store them together. Legally Blonde here, Big Little Lies there. Voila!
☆ Line your drawers with paper
Not only does this make your draws look chic, but it is super easy to replace when a draw inevitably gets a little messed up!
☆ Function first
Some of us tend to throw everything into a drawer (ahem, me), but the most effective way, is sorting what you use first and their function.
If you’re using the same blender every single morning, having that sitting on your benchtop makes more sense.
☆ Maximise your space with Tupperware and boxes
If you live in or have a small space you are trying to organise, maximise your space with boxes. Clea and Joanna love acrylic containers — they’re not only durable, but you can see everything that’s inside.
☆ Keep Going!
You may want a quick fix and in the short-term it will be, however, organising your space is a long-term project.
It’s important to maintain what you’ve done and give it a little bit of lovin’ every so often. And if you buy more stuff, you’ll need more places to put it!
The Home Edit is now streaming on Netflix.
