Visit All the Sydney Places Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt Used to Film ‘The Fall Guy’

The Fall Guy filming locations

Many Sydneysiders will remember when filming The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling as Colt Seavers and Emily Blunt as Jody Moreno, took over the Harbour City last spring and summer. I remember watching a movie at Westpac OpenAir Cinema last February, with The Fall Guy filming in Sydney Harbour behind the screen.

I attended the movie’s premiere this week (it’s in cinemas on April 24), and while I spotted that Sydney Harbour scene in the film, along with a few other recognisable areas around the city, there were a few places I didn’t. So, I did some digging and am sharing what I found ahead. Warning: plot line spoilers ahead.

The Fall Guy Filming Locations

Kurnell

According to IMDB, The Fall Guy filmed at Kurnell, a beach in the Sutherland Shire, an hour’s drive south of Sydney. The area is home to sand dunes and was also the filming location for Mad Max Furiosa.

Sydney’s Northern Beaches was also mentioned as a filming location, so it’s possible some of the beach scenes were also shot there.

Sydney Opera House

Many of the film’s scenes were shot on the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House. They were also filmed on boats in the harbour around the Opera House.

Ghost II

At the end of the film, when Tom Ryder, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, explains his plan to a tied-up Colt, he’s standing on a dock outside of what looked to be superyacht Ghost II.

The 37m-long yacht was designed by Dubai boatbuilders, Gulf Craft and holds up to 110 guests, with an overnight capacity of 12 guests. It’s available for private hire for a minimum of four hours, with the hourly rate starting at $3,000, depending on the date.

Martin Place

Many of the film’s scenes take place on the streets in the CBD, including at Martin Place, which IMDB mentions as a filming location.

In January 2023, Sydney Morning Herald reported that the film shut down Martin Place to shoot. The article says the last memorable time a Hollywood blockbuster took over Sydney was 20 years ago when Keanu Reeves filmed the Matrix series.

Disney Studios Moore Park

Disney Studios at Moore Park was listed as another filming location. The karaoke bar scene was likely filmed on a soundstage at Disney Studios as the bar didn’t resemble any in Sydney. The studios were likely also used to film the club where Colt is drugged.

Kimpton Margot Sydney

The hotel where Colt bumps into Jody and Gail, played by Hannah Waddingham, looks like the Kimpton Margot Sydney on Pitt Street in the CBD.

The building the hotel is housed in is one of Sydney’s most exquisite examples of Art Deco. Since the movie was filmed, the hotel opened Harper Rooftop Bar in November 2023. Located on level seven, it features a pool, bar and restaurant, alongside pastel décor and greenery.

Where Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt Visited in Sydney

While in Sydney for the filming, Gosling and Blunt were said to have dined at two-hatted Aria Restaurant.

Gosling, his wife Eve Mendes and their two kids rented director Baz Luhrmann’s property in Darlinghurst, reports The Hollywood Reporter. The family was also said to have visited Blue Mountains’ Scenic Park. Paparazzi snapped them trick o’ treating on Halloween in Bondi.

In December 2022, Daily Mail shared photos of Blunt and her husband John Krasinski leaving a private in Sydney after they were said to have left the city for a Christmas getaway. That month, they were also shown on a yacht in Sydney Harbour with their friends.
