It almost seems that we don’t go a day without news of another show getting the reboot treatment at the moment…and today is no different.
That 70s Show is the latest series to be brought back to life, this time as That 90s Show, which will be a ten-episode sitcom made for Netflix.
The new series will be set in 1995 and will see Leia Forman, daughter of Eric and Donna, visiting her grandparents for the summer where she bonds with a new generation of Point Place kids under the watchful eye of Kitty and the stern glare of Red.
As the show’s official logline reads: “Sex, drugs and rock ’n roll never dies, it just changes clothes.”
No release date has been announced as yet.
Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp, who played Red and Kitty Forman in the original series, are set to return to reprise their roles for the reboot. The pair will also serve as executive producers alongside original series creators Bonnie Turner and Terry Turner and their daughter Lindsey.
It has not yet been mentioned if any of the actors from the original cast will reprise their roles opposite Smith and Jo Rupp.
That ’70s Show premiered in 1998 and ran for eight seasons and 200 episodes. The show launched the careers of actors like Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Mila Kunis, Danny Masterson, Ashton Kutcher, and Wilmer Valderrama.
Masterson is currently set to stand trial for three rape charges in Los Angeles after being accused by three women of assaulting them in 2001 and 2003. Masterson has denied the charges.
Don Stark, Tommy Chong, and the late Tanya Roberts also starred in the original series.
Over the course of its run, That 70s Show was nominated for 16 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning just one for Outstanding Costume Design in 1999.
News of the reboot places That 70s Show alongside series such as Gossip Girl, Frasier, The Wonder Years, How I Met Your Mother and Sex and the City which have all been updated for the modern-day.
The original version of That 70s Show was available to stream on Netflix until last year when it was removed from the service. It has yet to find a new streaming home in Australia.
