Location, Opening Date, and More: What We Know About Soho House Sydney So Far

Soho House

News that Soho House was set to open its first Australian property broke in December 2022 and, throughout the past year, we’ve been drip-fed more and more details about it. The latest update means we now know where it’ll be located, what it’ll feature, and what it’ll look like.

“We’re excited to confirm that Soho House Sydney will be opening in the coming years,” the members-only club wrote on its Instagram overnight. “Located between Darlinghurst and Surry Hills, the House will be situated a stone’s throw from Sydney’s Oxford Street.”

According to Concrete Playground, it’ll be located above Shady Pines Saloon, on the corner of Crown and Foley Street. The multi-level venue will cost around $24 million, and if all goes to plan, the building will feature a restaurant and bar, gym, cabaret facilities and a rooftop terrace and pool.

“The plans also reveal anticipated changes to the façade, replacing the building’s fairly rundown exterior with a simple, sleek and modern cream and brown design in line with other Soho Houses around the world,” the publication writes.

It also shares that the original plan was to open Australia’s first Soho House on Domain Road in Melbourne’s South Yarra, but developers had to ditch the plan after strong opposition from local councils and a residents’ group.

If you’re not familiar with Soho House, it’s a private members-only club for creatives. Founded in London in the ‘90s, it now has over 40 locations across Europe, North America, and Asia. The clubs typically contain facilities like restaurants, cinemas, workspaces, spas, and bedrooms.

Membership types vary but the original is the simply-titled ‘Soho House’ membership. The ‘Every House’ will grant you access to any House around the world, while ‘Local House’ gives you access to just one location. Those under 27 can get a discounted ‘Under 27’ membership.

All memberships let you bring up to three guests at a time, give you access to the House’s gym and spa, if it has them, and let you attend daily events. Applications take about 15 minutes to complete and require you to share a recent picture of yourself and a little bit about your work and interests. It’s said that a committee only meets quarterly to approve new members.

Soho House hosted a pop-up in Sydney at boutique hotel Oxford Street in Paddington late last year for existing members. No news of when the permanent Soho House Sydney will open as of yet, but fingers crossed it’s soon.
