Sad news for anyone who hasn’t managed to buy a PS5 yet — Sony has announced a PS5 price increase, effective immediately, and Australia is one of the countries that’s been hit with the chunkier price tag.
Sony credits the price increase to “high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends.” So just go ahead and add the console to your list of items that are more expensive than they were this time last year. Lettuce, we’re looking at you!
The New PS5 Price in Australia
Both the standard and digital consoles now cost an extra $50, coming in at the below retail prices:
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive: $799.95 (was $749.95)
- PS5 Digital Edition: $649.95 (was $599.95)
The price increase is also effective in Europe, the UK, China, Mexico and Canada and will hit Japan on September 15.
The good news is that Sony is still committed to making the PS5 easier to find: “our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come.”

The lead-up to Christmas is still your best chance at getting a console, even if it’ll cost you a bit more than you planned. Retailers might even offer more bundle deals with big 2022 releases like Horizon: Forbidden West and Gran Turismo 7.
If the PS5 price increase has you looking for a gaming alternative, now might be a good time to consider the Switch OLED. The special Splatoon 3 edition is currently $549 at Amazon and Big W. Microsoft has also confirmed that the price of the Xbox Series X will stay at $749 despite the PS5 increase.
