Taika Waititi is a man of many, many talents and it’s no secret he’s also bloody hilarious. The New Zealand native is a recipient of an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, a Grammy Award, and has received two nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards. He’s also the mastermind behind critically acclaimed films like Boy and Jojo Rabbit.
Next up, the Thor director is getting back in front of the camera (and behind it too) in a new comedy series coming to BINGE, which is based (very) loosely on the true adventures of 18th-century would-be pirate, Stede Bonnet (played by Flight of the Conchords actor Rhys Darby).
Our Flag Means Death humorously follows Stede becoming captain of the pirate ship Revenge, after trading in the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes change after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Waititi). Stede and crew attempt to get their ship together and survive life on the high seas.
In addition to Darby and Waititi, the ensemble cast stars some very impressive names such as Nathan Foad, Samson Kayo, Vico Ortiz, Ewen Bremner, Joel Fry, Matt Maher, Kristian Nairn, Con O’Neill, Guz Khan, David Fane, Rory Kinnear, Samba Schutte, Nat Faxon, Fred Armisen and Leslie Jones.
In addition to taking on the role of Blackbeard, Waititi will also serve as executive producer and directed the pilot episode of the series.
Our Flag Means Death will debut with a triple episode premiere on March 3, 2022 on BINGE and the season will then continue with three new episodes on 10 March and two episodes on 17 March, leading up to the final two episodes on 24 March.
