After much anticipation, the Oscars 2020 nominations have arrived — and just like any year, there are a few surprises.
Announced by actors Issa Rae and John Cho on Tuesday morning (AEST), there were some clear standouts that dominated, including Joker, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite taking home a swag of nominations.
Joker, a film about mentally troubled comedian Arthur Fleck comes face-to-face with his alter-ego: the Joker — has an impressive 11 nominations, with Joaquin Phoenix the firm favourite to take out Best Actor.
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was awarded 10 nominations, and is likely to win Best Picture (if the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards are anything to go by) and Quentin Tarantino has been nominated for both Best Original Screenplay and Best Director. While he’s another favourite to win, he is up against Sam Mendes for his WW1 pic, 1917.
Brad Pitt was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for OUATIH, however, may be beaten by Tom Hanks, for his role as Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood.
1917 follows closely with 10 nominations, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Director.
Like the Golden Globes, the nominees for best director were all men, sparking some backlash, with Greta Gerwig missing out for Little Women.
Australian actress Margot Robbie has been nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Bombshell, however is up against some stiff competition with Laura Dern from Marriage Story who took out the same award at both the Critics Choice and Golden Globes.
