The Nominations for the 2021 Academy Awards Are In, With ‘Mank’ Leading the Way

The 93rd Academy Awards will be held on April 25 in the US and will be broadcast from multiple locations in order to comply with public safety protocols as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.

One of those locations will be Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre — which has been home to the ceremony since 2002, the other will be Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. Only the nominees, their guest and presenters will appear in person at the award show, with all other attendees to enjoy the event virtually.

There is currently no word on who, if anyone, will host the award show with the Academy opting to forgo one since Kevin Hart’s controversial ousting in 2018.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced the films, actors and filmmakers nominated for the prestigious awards, with Mank scoring ten of the prestigious nods.  Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas delivered the list of nominees from London.

Just as with the Golden Globes, the Best Director category saw history be made as two female directors earned nominations — Chloé Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman. Zhao and Fennell are only the sixth and seventh woman to ever be nominated for the Best Director nod, with Kathryn Bigelow the only one to have ever won —  for The Hurt Locker in 2010.

Late actor Chadwick Boseman continued his streak of posthumous nominations for his final performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottomearning a nomination in the Best Actor category.

Notably absent was a nomination for Spike Lee‘s Da 5 Bloodswhich garnered only a Best Score nom, depsite dominating more categories at other awards shows.
